Birmingham VA Medical Center is seeking a full-time Pharmacy Technician (Controlled Substance/Automation). Day tour of duty will fall between the hours of 5:00am and 6:00pm. HOWEVER, rotation to evenings, nights, weekends and holidays may be required. The primary purpose of this position is to maintain accountability for drugs (including controlled substances) that are processed through the automated equipment (i.e., Optifill, Fastfill, Pyxis and unit dose packaging equipment). The Pharmacy Technician is responsible on a daily basis for the processing, dispensing, and inventory of controlled drugs and drugs processed through automated equipment. The incumbent performs a variety of complex technical functions in the pharmacy which require the application of extensive knowledge of pharmaceuticals and pharmacy practices. Other duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 1. Inventory of controlled substances and interaction with controlled substance inspection officials. 2. Maintenance of prescription fill documents and prescription hard copies for accountability. 3. Packages drugs for shipment by regular, certified, registered or express mail. 4. Runs suspense reports for processing mail prescriptions. 5. Receives and transfers new stock and returns stock to inventory. 6. Sets up/fills prescriptions for controlled substances and non-scheduled drugs as needed for window and mail out. 7. Monitors and analyzes orders for distribution patters to identify questionable circumstances or unusual trends. 8. Provides controlled substance training for technicians, pharmacists, and inspectors. 9. Assists in developing written instructions and reference materials available for staff concerning automated equipment. The full description of duties is available from Human Resources.
