This Peer Specialist position will service in a developmental capacity to provide the individual with knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform the full range of routine and non-routine assignments. The incumbent functions as an interdisciplinary team member, assisting physicians and other personnel in a rehabilitation treatment program. Duties include, but are not limited to: - Assists physicians and other professional/non-professional personnel in a rehabilitation treatment program - Models effective coping techniques and self help strategies based on the peer specialist's own recovery experience - Functions as a role model by exhibiting competency in personal recovery and use of coping skills - Serves as an advocate and provides information and peer support for Veterans in outpatient, inpatient, and/or community settings - Observes behaviors that might indicate difficulty adapting or responding to treatment (e.g., missed assessment appointments, failure to attend or maintain abstinence, risk to self or others, disruptive behavior) - Completes appropriate documentation, and reports concerns to the treatment team in a timely manner - Assists Veterans in developing empowerment skills, identifying strengths, and combating stigma through self-advocacy - Performs outreach activities to establish community partnerships that will provide healthcare services for the Veterans in the community and inform Veterans of the availability of those health care services and other benefits - Assists Veterans in exploring their interests and options for making improvements in life functioning areas such as housing, employment, relationships, and community engagement Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
